The Wines
Coates 12 Mile Vineyard Robe Malbec 2009 Robe Malbec
has been under my eye since 2005. The results have taken a few years to come
through, with this variety showing great promise in the cool climate of Robe.
The winemaking has been managed to provide good structure and balance without
emphasizing the tendency of Malbec to provide ‘blocky’ tannins and a linear
flavour profile. Price – $35 Production – 240 cases made. Alcohol – 13.5% Winemaking – Malbec
sourced from the 12 Mile vineyard in Robe. Fruit was 70% destemmed and given
partial crushing into stainless steel fermenters. Wild yeast fermented with a
two and a half week ferment time on skins. Some whole bunch inclusion to
impart some carbonic lift to the nose. Post ferment the wine was given a soft
bag press and settled. Malolactic in barriques, maturation in 1-4 year old
French oak (Nadalie, Dargaud & Jaegle, Seguin-Moreau coopered) on fine
lees for 18 months. Bottled in December 2010 unfined and unfiltered. |
