Coates Clare Valley Sangiovese 2009

Given the opportunity to grab a small parcel of quality Clare Sangiovese was too tempting. This is really an experiment with techniques to see what can be done with the fruit. Maybe not quite a super Tuscan, but I am trying.

Price – $35

Production – 300 cases made.

Alcohol – 14.0%

Winemaking – Natural yeast ferment proceeding after cold soaking to extract soft, fine tannins. Fermentation was over a seven day period followed by pressing then malolactic in tank. Maturation was in French oak barriques (20% new) for 18 months. The final blend did get a small amount of Cab, Touriga and Shiraz pressings (7% all up) to flesh out the tannin profile and round out the mouth feel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered October 2010.
