Coates Consonance Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Good Pessac blanc is a gorgeous glass of wine. I am not inclined to drink straight Savvy Blanc very often and wanted to make an interesting light-bodied dry white that showed a little Bordelaise-inspired flair.

Price – $25

Production – 260 cases made.

Alcohol – 13.5%

Winemaking - 63% Semillon fruit sourced from Mt Compass (close to McLaren Vale but very cool and higher in altitude, approx 350m). The balance (37%) is Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc.

Semillon was wild yeast fermented in French oak barriques, 25% new (Remond, Nadalie Marsannay and Dargaud & Jaegle coopered), then aged on lees without sulphur for six months. The Savvy was handled in a more New World fashion with straight stainless steel tank ferment. Blended and bottled in October 2010, probably needs another six months in bottled to settle down.

Tasting Notes

Light straw in colour, the nose shows restrained tropical fruits accompanied by lemongrass and a hint of brioche. A lithe palate with plenty of citrus zing with guave and subtle toast notes leading into a long, crisp finish.
